For 2024, we are once again offering four 2-week sessions during July and August for campers aged 5-14.
Open to children ages 5 to 14 years old (as of August 31st, 2023), our theatre camp sessions run Monday to Friday from 9:00am in the morning until 4:30pm in the afternoon.
Each Summer Theatre Camp session is planned with the objective of ensuring a balanced mix of games and activities, all within a theatrical and drama framework. Over the course of the two weeks, campers will make new friends, re-discover old ones, be introduced to many of the basic theatrical elements of story-telling, acting, performing in public, the history of theatre, puppetry and mask, and much more.
Throughout it all, our counsellors do not loose sight of the fact that summer is meant to be enjoyed. Campers can anticipate many familiar and new games, challenges, theme days and perhaps the occaisional water fight or two (where many a counsellor has been known to end up on the wrong end of a student's water balloon). Act One is committed to making each session a memorable and rewarding experience for all involved: counsellors, parents and most importantly, the campers.
One of the biggest challenges many families face is to find a program that is a good fit for the interested camper. We hope the list below is helpful in determining if Act One might be a positive option for you. Please note this is only a partial list of all we offer. Feel free to contact the school if more infomration would be useful.
Act One has had the priviledge of helping over 3,000 young campers explore drama and discover their own inner "performer". We have used this long term experience to fashion and refine a unique summer theatrical program for ages 5-14.
With many campers trying drama for the first time, it can initially be an intimidating experience for them. We keep our ratio low so that our staff have all the flexibility they need to spend one-on-one time with any campers who made need a little extra personal attention and encouragement.
With the added maturity and knowledge that post-secondary training and live performance experience provide, this allows our camp staff the opportunity to let campers explore drama at a much deeper level than most camps. They are also equipped with greater life skills to help campers with any personal needs.
Campers' confidence, learning and creativity is impacted greatly by their interaction with fellow campers. Our camp structure ensures that all campers spend the majority of their time with campers of their own age.
Act One believes that what young performers have to say is important. We want them to be able to tell the stories that are important to them, not just be slotted into pre-packaged plays.
We believe it is important to the drama experience for campers to have the ability to perform in a true theatrical setting. All camp performances take place on Act One's fully-equipped theatrical stage.
In any session, we will have campers of widely varying drama experience and interests. Our program is designed to allow our staff to help each camper fashion a personal performance experience that they find both comfortable and challenging.
Part of our camp philosophy is to provide campers with opportunities to grow and expand their drama understanding and skills. A component of this is age-specific instruction. Campers 10+ take part in a half-day Improv workshop during the first week of the camp.
As part of the age-focused format, the senior campers (aged 12+) have the opportunity to write and shoot their own short film project during their session. Their film is screened during the camper show on the final Friday.
Camp is partly about creating memories and enjoying the experience. We photograph all sessions and film the campers' performances so that they can look back on their time here and families can sit back and enjoy watching their children perform, without having to worry about looking through viewfinders, etc.
Act One maintains a strong educational focus in all its programs, but also realizes that summer should be "fun". Each year our staff fashion a program that draws on the camp "culture" and traditions but that also shakes things up a bit so that there is always something new each year.
For families with less flexible work schedules, we offer early drop-off from 7:30am and late pick-up until 6pm. There is no requirement to pre-arrange and campers simply pay based on actual use, at a rate of $5.00/hr per family (not individual camper).
There is no requirement for advance payment for Act One camps, but for those families who do pay early, we offer a 5% Early Registration discount if payment is received in full by the applicable deadline.
If at any point during the period from registration payment to end of the session, a camper has to withdraw, we simply pro-rate fees based on the withdrawal details and settle up to that point. If a camper has pre-paid, we will refund any outstanding credit portion.
Act One believes in full upfront pricing. Our upfront camp fee is inclusive of all camp activities. There are no mid-session incidental fees, admission charges or ticket sales requirements, etc.
Any time an existing Act One camper refers a new camper to any Act One camp session, both the referring and newly referred campers each receive a 5% discount off their camp fees for one session. Referral discounts are both cumulative and retroactive.
Any camper who has also attended at least one term of Act One classes or a summer/March Break camp session in the preceeding three years will receive a 5% discount off all camp fees. These are cumulative with most other Act One discounts.

Our March Break Theatre Camp is planned with the objective of ensuring a balanced mix of fun and games along with creative and challenging activities, all within a theatrical and drama focus. Over the course of the week, campers will experience and enjoy a variety of theatre games, in both small and large group settings that will help them discover new aspects of drama, as well as providing hours of memorable fun. We maintain a flexible camp program to allow staff to adjust the week's activities to the experience levels and interests of the participating campers; whether returning "veterans" or those attending for their first time. Throughout it all, our counsellors do not loose sight of the fact that March Break is meant to be enjoyed. Campers can anticipate many familiar and new games and creative challenges, all being capped off by their session show performances on the Friday afternoon.
In general, our March break Theatre Camp offers much the same as our summer program, only in a scaled down version over 5 days instead of 10. Due to the short time span we unfortunately cannot offer the short film and Improv components however.
March Break is a time when many campers try drama for the first time. It can be an intimidating experience for them. We keep our ratio low so that our staff have all the flexibility they need to spend one-on-one time with any campers who made need a little added support and encouragement.

Act One believes it is important that campers not be stuck indoors for the entire week. Our camp allows for both indoor and outdoor activities based on weather-permitting and camper wishes.(Please note: Indoor only for 2023)
