Introduction
Act One’s teaching philosophy is to give its students a range of performance opportunities over the course of the year. This allows them to try out new skills and gain experience and understanding in how all the individual techniques, “rules” and stage work can come together both individually and in a collaborative manner.
The second event of the year is the Weekend of Monologues. It takes place on the last weekend in March. We schedule at least three nights of performances over the Friday to Sunday period.

Weekend of Monologues Overview:
The Weekend of Monologues consists of a series of evening performances where students have the opportunity to present material of their choosing that they have worked on in class. Unlike the year-end performances where each class presents its own, independent show, but similar to the earlier Winter Cabaret, students from most classes come together as one ensemble for this event. Students of all ages and focus (ie. stage, film, musical theatre, improvisation, vocal students, etc) get a second opportunity to discover just how inter-related all the different dramatic areas are.
The Weekend of Monologues differs from the Winter Cabaret in that, while the latter focused on providing stduents with an opportunity to practise collaborative scene performance, Act One's Monologue Weekend gives students the chance to gain experience and confidence in solo performance and the art of "story-telling".
Each show will run between 90 and 120 minutes, with a 15 minute intermission halfway through. While students of all classes will take part in each show and be intermixed with each other, we do try to take into account student ages and the most complimentary show order that allows each student performance to have its own moment “in the lights”.
In general, families of students aged 8-11 can expect that their children will perform in the first half of an evening. Act One strongly encourages students to stay for the entire show due to the educational value of watching a wide variety of performance types. We also understand family schedules and other commitments have to be considered. If families do have to leave before the end of a show, we ask that they plan to leave at intermission out of respect for and to avoid undo distraction of the other student performers and their audience members.
Extra Monologue One-on-One Coaching:
I realize that it can be difficult in a 90 minute class room environment for any instructor to give each student all the individual attention that they may need or want when working on their monologues, in order to be confident enough to perform them. I also believe very strongly in the benefits of the monologue experience. I do not wnat to deprive the students of it, either by removing it from the course plans or not helping the students reach a level of preparedness that allows them to make their own honest performance decision.
As a result, each year in March, I make myself available throughout the month for individual, 45-minute coaching sessions.
Act One students are free to reserve up to two (2) sessions initially. They can then come into the school outside of regular class time and I will work individually with them to help them better understand and prepare the monologue of their choice. If by March 21st, there are still slots open, I will then allow students to reserve additional slots if they want. I initially limit students to two sessions each in order to make sure I can assist as many students as possible over the month in the limited time I have.
You can review my availability in March for coaching sessions by going to the following web page:
View the Monologue Coaching Session Availability Schedule
To reserve one or more sessions, please just send me an e-mail to info@actonedrama.com. I ask that everyone follow these guidelines:
- Please include the student's name and their monologue title in the e-mail
- When requesting sessions that you would like, please identify at least four or five that would work for you. Even though I will only reserve two, if I haven't had time to update the website, sessions shown as open may already have been reserved. Having additional options to choose from allows us to avoid back and forth e-mails.
- If you later realize you can not make a session, please let me know ASAP as quite frequently I will have others asking about certain days and times. I would really like to not deprive a fellow student of any opportunity simply because someone forgot to mention they would not be able to show up.
- When the student comes to the session, please have them bring two (2) copies of the monologue we will be working on.
If you have any other questions about the coaching sessions, please feel free to contact me at the school. Please note that there is no charge for these sessions. I offer my time free of charge because I strongly believe in the benefits of this section of the year.
Ticket Information:
Tickets go on sale Wednesday, March 21, 2012. They will be available from the class instructors or the school office. They can be reserved in advance via e-mail for class pick-up.
Due to the studio’s audience capacity and number of participating students, families are initially allocated four tickets for each night a student performs (ie. students performing on multiple nights are allocated four tickets per show night). Those who would like more are welcome to put their names and quantity required on the show waiting list. If there are unclaimed tickets from the initial four-ticket allotments by Wednesday, March 28th, these are initially offered to those students on the waiting list. If, after everyone on the waiting list has been consulted, there are still spare tickets, these will be made available on a first come basis. Please note that in past years, most Weekend of Monologue shows have sold out. Rarely are tickets available at the door on show nights.
Weekend of Monologue 2012 Ticket Prices:
-
Adult: $5
-
Child (13 and under): $3
Important Note: 2011-12 Act One Students, 2012 March Break Campers and 2011 Summer Campers do not have to pay to attend Weekend of Monologue performances
Act One considers the Weekend of Monologues to be an important educational opportunity for all its students and campers. It is a chance to not only gain valuable experience and confidence with solo performance but also to broaden one's ability to think and communicate creatively while applying the power of one's imagination.
For families with more than one child at the school and students who may want to watch their friends on nights when they themselves are not performing, please be aware that current students and those who attended the 2011 theatre summer camp or 2012 March Break Theatre camp can attend the shows for free. Other friends and/or family would still have to pay. The only conditions are the shows not being sold out and student/camper free admissions must wait until just before show start to be seated.
Other Key Weekend of Monologue Details:
1. All Act One students are invited to participate in the Weekend of Monologues.
2. Participation is encouraged, but voluntary. Act One recognizes that busy winter schedules may conflict with show dates and/or the ability of students to prepare themselves sufficiently to be comfortable performing by themselves.
3. All students will recieve a Student Availability form in early March via e-mail. Students who wish to participate in the Weekend of Monologues must complete and submit this form back to the school no later than Wednesday, March 21, 2012. If you have not received a form by March 10th, please contact the school.
4. Participating students will have the opportunity to perform the monologue or Broadway musical number that they work on during the Feb/March period. The intent is to allow students to better understand how one performer can take simple words on a page and create a "world" in which to communicate them to an audience.
5. Participating students will perform on at least one night. Depending on numbers participating and student availability, students may be able to perform their monologue on multiple nights. It is important that students let the school know if they can and/or want to perform on which one or multiple evenings. (Note: It is not mandatory that parents attend on all nights that their children perform so long as they can get the students to the school by the required drop-off time and pick them up by show end.).
6. The exception to the above are students in the On Camera and Improvisation classes. On Camera students have the option of performing live and also screening their monologue videos. Improvisation students can participate in the class Improv event each evening and still perform a monologue is they want. If On Camera students do choose both options, the live performance will be scheduled on a different night from the video screening. This means that On Camera students wishing to do this will need to be available on at least two of the evenings. Improv students can perform their monologue on the same night as they perform with their Improv class if they want.
7. Students performing in Act I of any show will be required to be at the school at least 90 minutes prior to show start time. Act II performers must be at school no later than 60 minutes before show start This is to allow all students to properly prepare and warm up for the evening performance and to permit the studio to open on time for parent and guest convenience and comfort.
8. Act One teachers will be present on most nights their students perform. They will be happy to meet with parents to answer questions or discuss a student’s progress. Please check with your child’s instructor to confirm schedules.
Show Photography and Videotaping
Act One's philosophy is that all audience members have every opportunity to enjoy and support the students' performances. We recognize that this can often be difficult if one spends their entire evening watching events through a small viewfinder. For the convenience of those parents who would rather just enjoy watching their children perform, Act One makes every effort to make photography and/or videotaping entirely optional. Audience members are more than welcome to photograph and/or video tape any or all of the evening's performances but
please be aware that for most, if not all performance evenings, Act One will have both a photographer and videographer available to record the evening's events.
After the Weekend of Monologues is over (usually by late April), photographs are published on-line for students and their families to
view and download if they choose. For those who want higher quality digital originals for further reproduction, photo CDs can be ordered for $3 each. Samples of previous year Weekend of Monologues photographs can be viewed in the Photo Gallery section of the school website. Please note that the photos displayed in the school gallery is only a small subset of the range of photographs usually available after each show. These are posted to a seperate, on-line photo album that is private to Act One students and their families.
For those who are interested in a DVD of one or more of the Weekend of Monologues shows, these can be ordered for $6 for the first disc and $5 for any additional discs (whether the same or different show evenings). Videos are usually available by early May.
Photo CD and DVD fees go entirely towards covering the required materials costs (ie. discs, labels, cases, etc) and to help offset the costs of providing the photographer and videographers.
By March 28, 2012, we will update the following table to let everyone know which nights we can confirm photographer/videographer availability.

While Act One makes every effort to schedule these services, circumstances do sometimes prevent us having one or the other service available for a specific show night. If photographer/videographer availability is important to you, please contact the school before the performance to confirm the presence of either or both of the photographer and videographer.

Student Performance Schedule v5
|
| Table Notes: |
- Students are listed in alphabetical order for ease of name identification. This is not performance order.
- Students may be scheduled for multiple nights. Please review all three show nights to ensure full awareness of all performances.
- Every student entry has a code listed to the right. This indicates the type of performance that evening (for students in multiple classes and doing multiple pieces), as well as the performance number (ie. students may appear on just one or on multiple nights).
|
| Student Codes: |
- I - Improvisation
- M -Monologue
- D - Duologue
- F - On Camera Class Video Monologue
- S - Song (Broadway Musical Solo Number)
Note: if a number appears after the letter code, it refers to the fact the student will be performing multiple times. If no number appears, that night is the only night the student will be performing that specific piece (they may be performing other pieces on different nights however).
